Up until recently the Korean scientific community was hesitant about working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credence. But silence is no anymore an option.

The STR has been fighting to remove information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. This is just one aspect of how the concept of development has evolved.

Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environments, which can cause variations in genes or even complete genomes. Over time, these changes can lead to the emergence new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with disadvantageous ones. Over time, this differential reproduction may lead to the development of completely new species.

The word "evolution" comes from the Latin word"evolution" which means unraveling or revealing, however the concept itself has a myriad of meanings over the years as it has taken form in the sciences and elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process through which living things develop characteristics to increase their chances of living or producing offspring. Over time the genetic variability could lead to the emergence of completely new physical or biological traits in the population. The variation in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary change. However other changes that are not genetic, such as the increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet cannot be considered to be examples of evolution since they're not passed on to future generations.

Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial, in spite of the fact that it has been proven to be valid by a multitude of scientific tests and it has been tested over time. They argue that the theory shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their efforts to eliminate evolution from textbooks for high school which includes the removal of any references to the evolutionary roots of humans as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be an ancestral bird's parent.

In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made some headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbooks to include content on the evolutionary history of horses and their Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

It is important to remember, however, that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, including fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this belief vary. Some scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries, such as developing medicines or developing new medicines, while others are driven by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, typically for the benefit of humans. Some are simply curious, while others have a profound religious belief in God and want to understand how the universe works.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. While Creationists may not all be Christian, they are a majority. Creationists are typically divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

The YECs are perhaps the most well known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation is literal and that the universe as well as life on Earth were created just recently.

OECs are not as well-known however they're just as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and believe that evolution is a myth.

Both kinds of creationism deny the idea that scientific principles like biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life began on Earth. They argue that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought shunned miracles in fear that they might lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary and special creation and refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." In this theory, God creates the original species and then allows them to change over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species that are similar to the original.



Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and then slowly evolved. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis, and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.

In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution at schools. Numerous professional organizations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions are, however, more flexible and allow both evolution and creationism to be included in their curricula.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism, many of them think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks recently announced that they would remove references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this campaign. STR has won its first victory by removing examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. The next step is to remove portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research and also on human evolution.

STR claims to have the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an unflattering image for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the United States.  see this  of students in biology found that half did not believe evolution. The causes aren't clear however, they could be related to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR achieved many things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was a textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. It sparked interest in the college community. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught until today.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on creation science in major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
